Theme: Catalyzing diversity, equity, and inclusion in chemical sciences STEM.

Maseno University is hosting a two-day workshop on catalyzing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the field of chemical sciences STEM. The event, held at the university's amphitheater, was a collaborative effort between Maseno University and Glasgow Caledonian University Scotland, supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the RSC-Pan African Chemistry Network, under the leadership of Prof. Jacob Midiwo.

The workshop brought together esteemed collaborators including UNESCO, the Kenya Chemistry Society, IUPAC, KNAS and the Global Women Breakfast initiative, emphasizing the importance of collective action in fostering DEI in STEM fields.

Among the distinguished guests were Prof. Collins Ouma, Director of Research and Innovations; Prof. Godfrey Netondo, Dean of the School of Physical and Biological Sciences; Prof. Maureen Olel, Dean of the School of Education; Prof. Peter Oracha, Director of Student Affairs; and Prof. Patricia Múnoz Escalona of Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, who joined virtually.

The workshop also welcomed undergraduate and postgraduate students from Maseno University, as well as high school students from Ekambuli Secondary School. The participation of high school students provided a vital perspective on the challenges and experiences in STEM education at the secondary level of education, offering valuable insights for driving meaningful change.

Keynote speaker Dr. Mildred Nawiri from Kenyatta University shared her expertise and insights, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and representation in STEM disciplines. Prof. Oracha addressed the significance of accommodating special needs and disabilities within the realm of diversity in STEM, while Prof. Samuel Oyoo tackled language and communication barriers as critical factors hindering DEI efforts in STEM education and practice.

The workshop served as a platform for meaningful discussions, knowledge sharing, and the formulation of actionable strategies to advance DEI in chemical sciences STEM. Participants are inspired and empowered to drive positive change in their respective spheres of influence, fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for all aspiring scientists.

Maseno University remains committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM disciplines, recognizing them as essential pillars for innovation, progress, and societal development.
